Fuel Injector Cleaning Services Frequently Asked Questions
What's included in a flow job?
We take pride in giving great flow jobs! Your injectors will be tested at 3 flow rates: static, low, and high.
Here’s what you can expect from Flow Baby’s fuel injector cleaning service:
- Injector Coil Test: First, we measure your high-impedance or low-impedance injectors to verify the ohms reading. This is the quickest and easiest way to determine whether or not there’s an electrical problem.
- Injector Bench Test: We perform a bench test to flow your injectors (aka the “flow job”) at 3 pre-determined setpoints for both rpm and millisecond open time. For example: a low rpm might be 1,500 rpm and 1.5-msec, while a high rpm might be 8,000 rpm and 6-msec. This is customizable by you, or we can provide a standard range. We can also provide a sweep from 800 to 1,0000 rpm. Finally, we perform a static flow test where the injector is held wide open (not pulsed) to establish the injector flow rating at a certain fuel pressure.
- Ultrasonic Cleaning: The filters are removed from your fuel injectors and the injectors are cleaned in our special, heated ultrasonic tank to flush out any debris.
- Injector Bench Re-Test: We perform all of the tests in step #2 for a second time, and all results are carefully recorded on a data sheet (provided to you when the injectors are returned) to verify the effectiveness of the Flow Baby process.
What types of fuel systems does Flow Baby work with?
We support Throttle Body Injection (TBI), Multi-Port Fuel Injection (MFI), and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI).
What kind of injector cleaning machine do you use?
Flow Baby uses a state-of-the-art, professional-grade GB800 Gasoline Multi-Port MPFI Injector Tester that delivers OE level test capabilities at an affordable price.
We do NOT use a cheap machine like the ones you can find on eBay!
Okay, I want a flow job! Where should I ship my injectors?
After you’ve purchased your flow job, please ship your injectors (with insurance) to us at:
Flow Baby Injector Services, 50 Fannin Rd, Griffin, GA 30223
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND LABELING EACH INJECTOR ACCORDING TO WHICH CYLINDER IT CAME OUT OF IN YOUR ENGINE!
Why should I have my fuel injectors cleaned and flow tested?
If you race, you should have your injectors cleaned and flow tested at least once a year to make sure that they’re all flowing correctly, evenly, and as expected.
Additionally, if you run Q16, methanol, or E85, you know that, over time, these fuels can cause injectors to stick which means you’re running the risk of major engine damage. By having your fuel injectors professionally cleaned and serviced regularly, you can save thousands of dollars in the long run.
How often should I clean my fuel injectors?
Cleaning your fuel injectors should be a part of your regular maintenance and annual service, so we recommend a minimum of once a year.
Having your fuel injectors cleaned is a great, cost-effective way to prevent against avoidable issues in the future!
We also strongly suggest you send your injectors in to be flow tested and cleaned after any major engine issues as debris can cause issues with your injectors.
Why is fuel injector cleaning a good idea as preventative maintenance?
A stuck or poorly-flowing fuel injector can wreak havoc on your engine, possibly ending in catastrophic failure that costs you thousands. And, honestly, do you really want to deal with that when you’re in the middle of a high-stress race?
By having your fuel injectors professionally cleaned and flow tested as part of your preventative maintenance program, you won’t have to worry about the “what if” worst case scenario from something so simple going wrong.
I hurt my motor. Do I need to have my fuel injectors cleaned?
YES!
If you hurt your engine, there could be debris in your fuel injectors that can cause more damage even after you’ve made repairs or rebuilt your motor. Don’t risk it – having your injectors cleaned after engine issues can protect against repeat problems.
And, if you don’t know what exactly caused the damage in the first place, it likely could have been a dirty, damaged, or stuck fuel injector that led to the issue. Having Flow Baby check, clean, and confirm your fuel injectors is a smart choice to keep your engine healthy.
What kinds of fuels require injectors to be cleaned?
We recommend our fuel injector cleaning service for anyone who runs a high-performance race fuel such as Q16, methanol, E85, and others.
Over time, these fuels can cause injectors to stick which means you’re running the risk of major engine damage. By having your fuel injectors professionally cleaned and serviced regularly, you can save thousands of dollars in the long run.
Do boat and marine engines need fuel injectors to be cleaned, too?
Absolutely. Since boats and other water sport toys generally sit unused for long periods of time (during the winter, for example), fuel injectors can get damaged due to O-rings drying up or other components gunking up, and this can lead to a stuck injector that can seriously damage your engine.
Don’t wait until there’s an (expensive) problem you have to fix… we strongly recommend having a preventative, annual fuel injector cleaning service performed for all marine engines!
Do you replace the injector O-rings and filter screens during service?
Yes, we do! Replacing O-rings and filters is part of our standard fuel injector flow and cleaning service, and you can specify whether or not you’d like that work to be done when you purchase your service here.
Are the O-rings you use compatible with gasoline, ethanol, E85, and other fuels?
Yes! We only use O-rings that are approved for use with gasoline, ethanol, E85, and other fuels during our fuel injector cleaning service.
What do the different O-ring colors mean?
Oh, it’s pretty simple: the O-rings we use during our fuel injector service are colored according to size.
Do you also service and repair fuel injectors?
Yes, we do! If your injector needs minor service such as replacing O-rings, seals, pintle caps, filters, we can handle it!
